4. Understand that your situation is going to be different than other people you know

Each family has different dynamics, lifestyle preferences, beliefs, and problems. The way that you prepare for an emergency will be different than the way that I prepare. You should absolutely read prepping blogs, books, and manuals, but understand that you're going to have to personalize your preparations when you have kids.

My son is seven. He likes running and jumping and video games, but he also has physical limitations the come into play when I'm trying to prepare. He's got asthma, so I have to be ready to handle an asthma attack or flare-up even during an emergency. This means having a battery-operated nebulizer handy. It means having extra medication ready. His asthma even means that he might not be able to walk very far during an emergency, so any type of evacuation plan cannot involve walking.
